Ladder to Heaven

Lily-of-the-valley, Convallaria majalis

Pineo Photo - Lily-of-the-valley, Convallaria majalis

Convallaria majalis can often be found in cemeteries carpeting the ground. The sweetly scented lily-of-the-valley tends to provoke images of mourning, but it also is a symbol of humility and chastity. There are but three species in the genus and even then it is sometimes considered one variable species, according to the “A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants.” The plant spreads by its rhizomes, creating the carpetlike effect with its lush greenery and nodding blooms. And its favorite place? A shady one, another plus for the delicate-looking plant. Lily-of-the-valley is actually hardy to Zone 2.
