A Daisy a Day

Gerber daisy

Gerbera jamesonii was discovered in 1884 in South Africa and soon found its way into England’s gardening landscape. Scientists did the usual tinkering and today we have what is the Gerber daisy. According to one florist site, the Gerber daisy is the fifth most popular florist flower in the world. All this from a plant expedition to the grasslands of the Northern Province of South Africa  where a jewel of a flower blossomed.  Gerber daisies should be treated as summer annuals in Maine, adding a bright glow to potted arrangements or in garden beds.
