Off to Gay Paree

Paeonia lactiflora 'Gay Paree'

THE WEEKEND EDITION (So big it covers two days)

There’s nothing better to ease depression than the thought of ‘Gay Paree.’ The flower, that is. Introduced in 1933, this vibrant Paeonia lactiflora is from Edward Auten Jr., who didn’t disappoint with this cerise and ivory combination that explodes with joie de vivre. Pictured is a vigorous clump of ‘Gay Paree’ in Ken Liberty’s garden in Bangor, taken a few years back during the annual peony tour.

Peony Fact of the Day: The peony is the “flower of riches and honour” and is used symbolically in Chinese art. The city of Luoyang has dozens of peony exhibitions and shows annually.
