Spiffy in Stripes

Crocus vernus 'Pickwick'

Janine Pineo Photo - Crocus vernus 'Pickwick'

Crocus vernus ‘Pickwick’ has an unusual look among its brethren: stripes. A silvery lilac shade is striped with darker purple lines, setting it apart from other giant Dutch crocus that are often a single shade. Although giant crocus seems a bit of a misnomer given that the plant only grows about 4 inches tall, it does seem to dwarf its smaller relative, the snow crocus, which might top out at 3 inches in height. ‘Pickwick’ readily naturalizes like other C. vernus varieties. If growing in the lawn, make sure to let the foliage grow undisturbed until late spring or it turns yellow so that the corm can recover for next year’s show.
