Low Five

Potentilla tabernaemontani 'Orange Flame'

Miniature versions of plants can prompt a double-take, and Potentilla tabernaemontani ‘Orange Flame’ is a flaming example. With its snazzy flowers, this miniature cinquefoil puts on quite a show despite its diminutive height of 4 inches. A single plant can spread up to a foot at maturity if planted in full sun in a well-drained location. The name cinquefoil translates to five leaf, with a nomenclature that wends its way through the centuries. Suffice it to say, it also is known as barren strawberry for its marked resemblance to actual strawberry plants, just without the tasty fruit.
