With its appealing “face,” the pansy has long been a gardener’s favorite: easy to grow and a profusion of blooms. Viola × wittrockiana is the hybrid of Viola tricolor, better known as heartsease or Johnny-jump-up. And the resulting hybrids run the gamut of colors and combinations. Every year it seems there are multiple new pansies to consider in the marketplace. Consider the Dynamite series of pansies, which boasts 25 colors and includes ‘Blueberry Thrill,’ pictured above. With its pairing of purple-blue and yellow, it makes a bright statement that should blossom from spring to fall. The plant was bred to keep a compact habit, generally 5 to 8 inches. We found this one at Hummingbird Hollow greenhouse in Holden.
