Fluffy Bandage

Sanguinsorba officinalis cultivar

Sanguisorba officinalis is one of those exuberant plants that flip and flop about with abandon. A member of the Burnet genus, this particular one is Great Burnet, a perennial herb hardy to Zone 4 that can easily reach 3 feet in height. Pictured is a cultivar of S. officinalis with fluffy blooms of pale pink; S. officinalis has darker blooms, usually dark red to black purple. The burnets tend to have interesting leaves – and plenty of them. Described as odd-pinnate, the serrated leaves are a nice medium green and are edible. As a medicinal herb, Sanguisorba officinalis has been used for centuries for bleeding conditions. The name itself is reflective of that: sanguis for blood and sorbeo for staunch. Kind of like nature’s own bandage.
