A Crisp Salute

Cucumber 'General Lee'

It is easy to lose one’s way in the land of cucumbers: so many varieties and so little garden space to try them all. One standout we’ve found here at Garden Maine is ‘General Lee,’ a hybrid that was bred for the South but seems to be a reliable producer in the North. With dark green fruit reaching 8 or so inches long, this white-spined variety will produce steadily for weeks in optimal conditions. Direct seed ‘General Lee’ when danger of frost has passed in May and you should see fruit in a couple of months. As an added bonus, it is resistant to cucumber mosiac virus, downy mildew, powdery mildew and scab.
