Grass-green, toe-curling Lolium is something people walk all over. Look at it, a thick carpet just waiting for bare feet. There are nine species of ryegrass in the “true grasses” family, Poaceae, which is the fifth largest plant family in the world, containing more than 10,000 species both wild and domestic. Ryegrass is native to Europe, Asia and Africa and were brought to North America. It is valued as a cool-season grass, with the ability to grow fast in those conditions, and is used frequently in lawn mixes. The plant is also high in nutrients, making it popular for feeding stock.
