Fun from Fedco – Lush Lettuces

We had so much fun with our Awesome April Giveaway, that we couldn’t resist doing it again for May after a Saturday visit to the Fedco Tree Sale in Clinton at the seed company’s warehouses.

All week we will be giving away a different set of seeds every 24 hours, awash with interesting varieties that you won’t find just anywhere. Actually, you generally can only order some online, so let’s call this exclusive and go with that!

Our fifth and final set of seeds is a trio of lettuces, all tasty additions to your vegetable lineup.

North Pole lettuce is a lime-green butterhead, but it is not all about beauty alone. No, this variety is extremely cold hardy. Fedco has this to say: “Can be set out under cover 2–3 weeks before first frost to aim for 4–6″ plants at the onset of winter weather. Will resume vigorous growth as days grow longer, tolerating spring frosts.” Good plant.

Tom Thumb Baby Bibb lettuce is a miniature butterhead that could not be easier to grow. Plants mature in a little over a month and a half, with baby greens ready long before that. The flavor is superb.

Speckled Amish lettuce is as pretty as a picture and totally edible. This bibb lettuce is apple green with maroon flecks liberally spotting the leaves.

You should grow these this year and you could.

All you have to do is enter to win.
