Flowering kale is one of those ornamental plants that can confound people given the word “kale” in its name. This Brassica usually isn’t edible but is grown for its looks, which often resembles enormous flowers. ‘Kamome Red’ has fringed leaves with ruffled edges. The heart of the head is a purple-red that is influenced in its color by the cold. Being a Brassica, the plant performs best in the cooler weather of fall, the colors intensifying when other plants are fading. It can tolerate frost, reaching a height of 15 to 18 inches at maturity.
