Sweet Pea

Mammoth Melting Sugar pea

Tried and true is what keeps heirlooms popular. And few are as reliable as Mammoth Melting Sugar pea. This snow pea produces beautiful flowers that quickly turn into huge, flat, edible pods that are great raw or in a stirfry. They also freeze well for use later. The vigorous plants can reach about 5 feet in height and will produce steadily if the pods are picked regularly (probably every other day for optimum production). The flavor is sugar-sweet and the pods are crisp and crunchy when raw or lightly stir-fried.

Janine Pineo Photo | Snow and snap peas are excellent raw or quickly cooked. Clockwise from top left are Mammoth Melting Sugar, Golden Sweet, Sugar Snap and Spring Blush.
