Filipendula ulmaria ‘Flore Pleno’ is a striking double-flowered herbaceous perennial that easily can reach four feet in height. Hardy to Zone 2, meadowsweet doesn’t mind a fair amount of moisture, thriving in full sun or partial shade as long as it has plenty of moisture. Meadowsweet has a storied history, its uses plentiful. It was a popular strewing herb, with its wintergreen-almond scent. The herb was used to flavor wines and beers and even soups, imparting an almond flavor. Cosmetically, it was used as an astringent. Perhaps most interesting is the chemical content: salicylic acid. Bayer used dried meadowsweet leaves in its original formulation for aspirin, deriving even the name from the plant’s original botanical name, Spiraea ulmaria. For centuries, the plant has been used to treat headaches, arthritis, stomach upsets, diarrhea and heartburn.
