Courtesy Aaron BowdenBelfast Garden Club’s public monthly meeting and speaker series continues February 18th, featuring a presentation, Bonsai in a Nutshell with Aaron Bowden, bonsai educator. The program is free and the public is encouraged to attend. The brief club meeting begins at 1 p.m. Join us for refreshments from the hospitality committee at 1:45 p.m., the speaker will begin at 2 p.m. The afternoon meeting and program take place at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church Parish House, 95 Court St., Belfast.

Aaron Bowden is an artist, potter and bonsai educator. He began studying the art of bonsai in 1988, and since then, he has studied and taught bonsai art in Maine, Florida and the Midwest. His bonsai and pottery can be seen at his Koboku Bonsai Studio in Bucksport. He offers workshops, lectures and demonstration in the art of bonsai.

From Mr. Bowden’s artist’s statement: “ As I grew up in Maine on the rocky coast, and traveling in the deep woodland forests, I witnessed how nature had created some of the most mature wild trees, weather-beaten and naturally beautiful. Truly works of art, sculpted by nature’s hands. In bonsai, one strives to mimic the maturity and beauty nature has created in the landscape. It takes constant daily care, time and patience, to develop bonsai to be happy and healthy as they live their lives confined to a container. Season to season, proper watering, feeding and sunlight are essential for healthy development. As bonsai change and grow, so do we.”

The Belfast Garden Club has promoted the knowledge and love of gardening and civic beautification since 1929. They maintain 12 gardens around the city each year, host Open Garden Days garden tours during the summer, and support education through donations to the Belfast Free Library, Troy Howard Middle School Garden Project, and an annual education scholarship. Each meeting of the Belfast Garden Club is open to the public. The club welcomes new members and volunteers year round.
