If you’re among the many gardeners who are eager to “get digging” after this seemingly endless winter, the Belfast Garden Club asks that you remember its annual Green Thumb Plant Sale that will be held on Saturday, May 17, at the Belfast Boathouse.

The hugely popular sale, which has become the unofficial start of the gardening season in the Belfast area, depends on donations from local gardeners, farms and nurseries. If you are dividing perennials and have some new starts that you’d like to donate, or you’d like to donate a six-pack or more of some annuals – flowers, veggies or herbs – the club would be thrilled to receive your gifts.

It’s easy to donate. Please note two different locations depending on day of donation.

  • Bring potted, labeled plants to 10 Bradbury St. (corner of Bradbury and Charles) any time and up to the end of the day on Thursday, May 15. Labels should include generic and Latin names (if possible) and plant color, if known. No need to make an appointment – just drop off your donation at the front steps. Be sure to include your name, mailing address and estimated plant values so we may send you a donor acknowledgement letter.
  • If you can’t pot your donations, bring moist, labeled root balls – in garbage bags, please. Club volunteers will pot and label them.
  • On Friday, May 16, bring plants (potted and labeled plants only) to the Boathouse, 34 Commercial St., between 8 a.m. and noon.

Proceeds from the Green Thumb Plant Sale provide critical support for many of the club’s civic programs, including its 12 public gardens throughout Belfast and its scholarship program, which awards financial aid to Waldo County high school graduates working toward a degree in biology, conservation, ecology, horticulture, natural resources, sustainable agriculture or a related field.

Donating to the plant sale is a “win” for everyone involved. If you need someone to pick up your donations, or have any questions about how to donate, contact Karen Meisenheimer at 323-6360 or

Mark your calendar now for the Green Thumb Plant Sale on Saturday, May 17, from 9:00 am to noon at the Belfast Boathouse.
