Kneading Conference

July 26, 2012 - July 27, 2012

The 6th annual Kneading Conference will be held on Thursday, July 26th, and Friday, July 27th, in Skowhegan, Maine,  and the Artisan Bread Fair will follow on Saturday, July 28th. The Kneading Conference brings together novice and professional bakers, grain farmers and millers, researchers, wood-fired oven enthusiasts and lovers 0f handcrafted breads for workshops, presentations and panel discussions.

Preregistration is required for the Kneading Conference, with a fee of $300 which includes all meals.

The Maine Artisan Bread Fair is free and open to the public.  The summer festival invites fair-goers to sample fresh-baked breads and pizza from wood-fired ovens, talk to professional bakers, listen to live music, watch demos, and seek out the best baking equipment, tools, books, Maine cheeses, organic milkshakes, hand-woven kitchen towels, antique kitchen wares, fresh farm foods, and much more.

Both events take place at the Skowhegan State Fairgrounds, the longest continuously running agricultural fairground in the United States.

Wheat is growing at the Fairgrounds for harvest during the conference. Hight Chevrolet, owners of the Fairgrounds, gave permission to convert a corner of their parking field into a grain trial.  Last September Garin Smith of Grassland Organic Farm prepared the soil.  As soon as the snow leaves the ground he will plant the seed. With a little help from the weather, there’ll be a patch of wheat for the scythe demonstration, and local wheat berries to clean and mill and compose into loaves of bread.
