Nettle-free Zone

Lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver'

Lamium maculatum ‘Beacon Silver’ swiftly makes a groundcover worthy of the name beacon. It draws the eye with its variegated foliage – the silver – and pink blossoms do the rest. Lamiums are the deadnettles, so called because unlike stinging nettles and their irritating nettle hairs, lamiums only look like nettles but without the bite. Hardy to Zone 4, the plant spreads by seed and by stem rooting. If a stem touches the ground, it will root. But the best thing about this lamium is the fact that it likes the shade. From partial to full shade, it thrives and creates light and color in oft-dark spaces. Not so dead after all.
