Aroostook Farmer to speak at Urban Earth Day Celebration in Portland

April 22, 2012 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

Jim Gerritsen of Wood Prairie Farm in Bridgewater will be a featured speaker at the 2012 Urban Earth Day celebration in Portland’s Monument Square on Sunday, April 22, rain or shine.  Gerritsen, who with his family raise MOFGA-certified organic seed potatoes in Aroostook County, is president of the Colorado-based national trade group Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association, the lead plaintiff in the landmark lawsuit OSGATA et al v. Monsanto.

Gerritsen will speak to the Earth Day crowd about the latest developments in the federal lawsuit that involves scores of plaintiffs representing hundreds of thousands of members.  The legal action, which has received worldwide attention, is challenging Monsanto’s transgenic/GMO patents and is seeking court protection for family farmers under the Declaratory Judgment Act.  An Appeal was recently filed by the family farmers’ attorneys on the pre-trial dismissal of the case by Judge Naomi Buchwald in Manhattan.

A speech by Portland Mayor Michael Brennan will lead off the festivities at the Urban Earth Day event.  Many of Portland’s environmental and non-profit organizations, artists, sustainable businesses and residents will come together and help the public learn about local efforts to promote the city’s green economy and improve Portland’s urban environment. The event offers fun, free activities for all ages. Highlighted will be local, organic food and seed, compost demonstrations, agricultural presentations, seed and plant give-aways, dance performances, art, street musicians, face painting, and much more. Wolfe’s Neck Farm will showcase local agricultural and environmental education activities for youth including displaying some of their farm animals. Portland’s Department of Public Services will provide information on ways residents can prevent stormwater pollution, an important environmental effort to improve the health of the city’s natural waterways.
